About this course
Course duration 3 hours
This course is designed to give gardeners increased subject knowledge and confidence on topics that are relevant to typical work in garden maintenance.
It is not designed to replace formal school, vocational training or previously gained experience. It should add to your existing knowledge in order to help secure a job or increase your general understanding of this area. Completion of the videos and quizzes and the issuance of a certificate will demonstrate to your current or potential employer that you have increased your knowledge in the area of gardening.
The course consists of viewing short videos followed by a short quiz on the following subjects:

- How to safely use a chainsaw
- Chainsaw maintenance
- How to properly adjust your chainsaw chain tension
- How to use a string trimmer
- Leaf blower use tips
- How to use a pressure washer
- Pressure washer 3 common problems and solutions
- Lawn mower maintenance tips
- Proper use of ladders
- How to mulch – the 3 musts of mulching
- The ABC’s of pruning
- How to prune trees
- How to prune trim and shape bushes and shrubs
- Learn the basics of fertilizing
- How to make great compost
- Planning a vegetable garden for beginners
- When to water
Upon completion, a certificate and summary of the topics covered will be issued in your name. You can log in and re-take the course at any time in case a refresher is needed for any reason such as an upcoming job interview or promotion.
Course instructions
We recommend you view each video at least twice before attempting the quiz. You can only move on to the next video upon successful completion of the accompanying quiz. The pass mark is 100% – don’t worry, questions are designed to ensure you understood the video content, we are not trying to catch you out! In case you do not pass the quiz the first time, you can re-watch the video and take the quiz again. Once its passed, you can move on to the next module.
While watching each video, pay close attention and concentrate on the content. Do not let any distractions reduce your concentration level. Quiz questions will be relatively easy to answer if you have paid complete attention but difficult if you have not.
To confirm that you have watched the videos, each quiz has some questions about the video itself, such as colour of the presenters clothing or hair. These are random and can be about anything in the video. Please watch the video fully in order to be able to answer these questions correctly, this will save you time.
Do not attempt to do the quizzes without watching the videos, read and understand the course vocabulary list before attempting the course.
Once all modules are successfully completed a copy of your certificate will be available for download.
